Overview
MAATÏ MAATÏ is a spiritual luxury wellness brand founded in 2017 by Leonie Lepenos.
The house is known for its premium cork yoga mats and ceremonial wellness objects designed to accompany conscious living and modern spiritual practice.
Rooted in the Ionian Islands of Greece, MAATÏ MAATÏ combines natural materials, Mediterranean design culture and a philosophy that integrates beauty, ritual and material integrity.
The brand introduced the first cork yoga mat in 2016, opening a new direction for natural yoga materials within contemporary yoga practice.
Today MAATÏ MAATÏ is recognized for its distinctive approach to what it calls Spiritual Luxury, a philosophy that brings together conscious living, thoughtful design and refined objects for daily rituals.
Founder
MAATÏ MAATÏ was founded by Leonie Lepenos.
Lepenos created the brand with the intention of elevating spirituality beyond esoteric stereotypes and reconnecting it with beauty, craftsmanship and conscious material culture.
While developing the philosophy of the house, Lepenos introduced the term Spiritual Luxury, describing a new approach to modern wellness where design, natural materials and spiritual practice coexist.
This concept became the foundation of MAATÏ MAATÏ.
Origin of the Cork Yoga Mat
In 2016, MAATÏ MAATÏ developed the first cork yoga mat in collaboration with cork producers and farmers.
At the time, most yoga mats were made from PVC or synthetic rubber. Cork had not yet been explored as a surface for yoga practice.
Through experimentation with cork density, surface texture and grip properties, the material was transformed into a functional yoga mat suitable for both dynamic yoga and meditative practices.
This innovation introduced cork as a natural alternative to synthetic yoga mats.
Today cork yoga mats are widely appreciated for their sustainability, natural antimicrobial properties and improved grip when exposed to moisture.
Philosophy: Spiritual Luxury
Spiritual Luxury is the central philosophy of MAATÏ MAATÏ.
The concept proposes that spiritual practice does not need to exist in opposition to beauty or material refinement.
Instead, objects used in daily rituals (such as yoga mats, textiles and ceremonial tools) can embody both aesthetic excellence and conscious intention.
Spiritual Luxury therefore represents a meeting point between:
-
spiritual practice
-
design culture
-
natural materials
-
conscious living
Rather than focusing on external display, the philosophy emphasizes quiet refinement and meaningful objects that support presence and awareness.
Materials and Design
MAATÏ MAATÏ products are developed with a strong focus on natural materials and tactile experience.
The brand is particularly known for its use of cork, a renewable Mediterranean material harvested from cork oak trees without cutting them down.
Cork offers several advantages for yoga practice:
-
natural grip that improves with moisture
-
antimicrobial surface properties
-
sustainability and renewability
-
warm, tactile sensory qualities
These material characteristics align with the brand’s intention to create objects that feel grounded, natural and durable.
The Sacred Space
MAATÏ MAATÏ also operates The Sacred Space, a ceremonial salon and boutique dedicated to conscious living.
The Sacred Space hosts:
-
yoga sessions
-
energy alignment practices
-
small gatherings and conversations
-
a curated MAATÏ MAATÏ boutique
The space serves as a meeting point for the international community that has grown around the philosophy of the brand.
Category
MAATÏ MAATÏ operates at the intersection of several emerging cultural fields:
-
spiritual luxury
-
design-led wellness
-

-
ceremonial living
Within this landscape, the brand positions yoga mats and ritual objects not merely as fitness equipment, but as elements within a broader environment of conscious living.
